Nutrition

Nutrition

Why is it important?

It is important that you have a balanced diet to make sure your body has the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals it needs to work its best.

 Good nutrition can help:

 - Reduce the risk of some diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, some cancers, and osteoporosis
- Reduce high blood pressure
- Lower high cholesterol
- Improve your well-being
- Improve your ability to fight off illness
- Improve your ability to recover from illness or injury
- Increase your energy level

Balanced Diet

- Eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day (see 5 A Day)
- Base meals on higher fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta
- Have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks)
- Eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein
- Choose unsaturated oils and spreads, and eat them in small amounts
- Drink plenty of fluids (at least 6 to 8 glasses a day)

Eat healthy on a budget

With the price of food rising it can be discouraging to spend that extra money on an already expensive weekly food shop, if you follow the following tips it can help keep the costs down and the food fresh.

- Write a shopping list and plan meals

- Waste nothing

- Eat left overs for lunch

-Buy frozen fruit and vegetables

- Try cheaper brands

- Look out for BOGOF offers
